Honokowai – One of the positive changes since the Coronavirus pandemic began is that more and more students at all levels want to study science and have a career in health care.
Doctors on Call Urgent Care and Testing Center is doing a lot to encourage and support this. Students from both Lahainaluna High School and Maui Preparatory Academy are being taught and mentored both formally and informally.
“A job and career in medicine, nursing or any medical field has always been a source of security and life-satisfaction,” said Dr Norman Estin, Medical Director of Doctors on Call. “It is just great to watch the enthusiasm of our staff when they get to show these kids what medicine is really like.”
Some of the students are doing organized Senior Projects for school credit, while others have worked out more informal study arrangements.
“Ideally,” said Dr. Estin, “These kama’aina students will get trained, certified, and eventually return to Maui to help take care of us all. That is happening a bit already, and it is wonderful to see.”
